5 Questions to Ask Yourself When Buying a Family Car…

Starting your own family is going to come with plenty of extra expenses because there are so many things that need to be bought and I’m not just talking about pushchairs and baby grows. You also need to think about a house and a car and these are certainly not cheap! Due to the fact that they are both expensive purchases, you need to make sure you are finding the perfect item for you and your family.

When you are buying a new family car, it is not as simple as just deciding which car you like because there are a number of other factors that will need to be assessed before you make this big purchase. Here are some questions you will need to ask yourself…

–          Can a car seat fit in the car?

Unfortunately, the car seat is another expense; however, it is necessary for the safety of your child in the car. If the car seat does not fit in the car, then your child will not be able to go anywhere and a car seat is required, by law, until your child is three years old. So when you are going to look at new cars, you will need to check whether you will have any problems fitting the car seat in.

–          Can the passenger airbag be turned off?

An airbag can be deployed at a speed of 200mph, so if you child is on the other end of that speed, then it can be fatal. If your child does travel in the front seat of your car, then having the option to turn the airbag off can be life-saving. However, if the car you want does not have the option to turn off the airbag deployment, then there are other things you can do, for example, if your child has a front facing car seat in the front passenger seat, then make sure the passenger seat is pushed back as far as it can go; this will make sure the airbag does not hit the child. Also, remember to NEVER put a rear-facing car seat in the front passenger seat if the airbag is active; this can be fatal.

–          Is there plenty of room for everyone?

This is something that you need to be thinking about; if you only have one or two children, then a regular 5 seated car will be great. However, if you have more children, then you may want to consider purchasing a people carrier just to make sure everyone has plenty of room. This is personal preference, but you should consider how comfortable everyone will be.

–          Is there plenty of room for other items?

If all of the seats in your car are filled and you have extra items, such as shopping or suitcases, you need to transport, then you need to think about whether everything and everyone is going to fit. Basically you need to think about whether the size of the car is practical for everything you may need to use it for.

–          Can you access the backseat?

If you have children, then having access to the backseat is very important. A 5-door car is recommended for a family car because a 3- door car is fairly impractical if you need to put your child’s car seat in the back. It is even more impractical when you have to put your child in the car seat! Think about if you needed to get to your child quickly; would a 3-door car just be a hassle?

So these are five questions you need to ask yourself when you are thinking about purchasing a new family car. Basically, you need to be thinking about the practicalities and not just thinking about what it looks like.
